What is Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) and why do I have to pay it?
Depending on your personal circumstances and your property purchase price, you maybe liable to pay a tax to the UK government. This tax is calculated as a percentage of your property purchase cost, with the percentage changing depending on your purchase price. This is know as Stamp Duty Land Tax or SDLT for short. Currently any property purchase that is under £125,000, does not attract Stamp Duty.
As of March 2012, the UK government has abolished stamp duty relief for first time buyers.
